Isabgol, also known as Psyllium husk, is husk of the seeds of a plant called Plantago ovato. It is hygroscopic in nature and expands to become mucilaginous. Isabgol contains around 70% soluble fibre and 30% insoluble fiber, which makes it very effective in relieving problems related to digestion. Isabgol has several health benefits to offer. Being hygroscopic in nature due to the soluble fibre content, Isabgol helps in absorbing moisture letting the stools become softer. On the other hand, the insoluble fibres provide ample roughage to the waste products, thereby promoting bowel movement. To relieve constipation, Isabgol is usually consumed with warm milk.
Soluble fibre present in Isabgol has a tendency to absorb extra moisture in the intestine. The fibres help in binding up loose stool. In case of diarrhoea, Isabgol is usually consumed with curd.
